Ch..Ch..Changing the Future: Social Media’s Hockey Future

Accept it. It’s changing hockey. And there’s nothing you do or say to stop it. We have already seen the changes social media has made to hockey in the last five years, and we are going to see a lot more in next five years. And it probably won’t be in the forms we use today.

If history teaches us anything, Facebook, Twitter, and other major social media platforms will probably be replaced by new and more cutting edge technologies. We have already seen this with MySpace, MSN Messenger, and Hotmail. In fact, new social media technologies are already out that are challenging Facebook and Twitter, such as Google+.

So how will this change hockey? I’m not sure. But if I had to guess, I would say that we will know more about the players personal lives than we know today because we will have more access to them. Players’ connections with their fans will only increase, thus giving more information on their personal lives.

We will also know more insider information because there will be more ways of covering it. Hockey rumours, which are becoming more popular, will probably become more mainstream because their is a demand for it. Social media will help spread this information faster because of new technologies.

Whether these new changes are good is debatable, and whether these specific changes actually happen is even more debatable. But I’m willing to go out on a limb and say hockey coverage will change drastically in the next five years because of social media.
